The General Assembly designated 19th August as "World Humanitarian Day" to honor all humanitarian and the United Nations and associated personnel who have lost their lives in the cause of duty and those who have worked in the promotion of the humanitarian cause.
On August 19, 2003, the UN headquarters in Baghdad were bombed, killing the UN chief envoy to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and 21 other humanitarian workers.
The 2013 World Humanitarian Day marks the 10th anniversary. This year "the UN and its humanitarian partners are launching a ground-breaking campaign called The world needs more… This is a first-of-its-kind project that will quite literally turn words into aid."
